What are machinable ceramics?

Machinable microcrystalline glass ceramics are fluorite mica microcrystalline glass with synthetic mica as the main crystal phase, mainly composed of fluorite mica (Mg3K [AlFe2O (SiO3) 3]) and glass with silicon dioxide as the main component. It is a new material that emerged in the 1970s, with high mechanical strength, excellent dielectric and thermal properties, and good chemical stability.

The most prominent feature of machinable ceramics is their excellent machinability. It can be processed into various complex shaped parts using universal metal processing equipment, including turning, milling, planing, sawing, grinding, cutting, tapping, etc., and can achieve a considerable level of machining accuracy. No special tools or equipment are required.

Machinable ceramics are a type of polycrystalline composite material, which is a microcrystalline glass mainly composed of synthesized mica microcrystals. The color is pure white and the organization is dense. The microcrystalline content accounts for more than 50% of the total volume, and the microcrystalline particles are between 5 μ m and 20 μ m.

Machinable ceramic materials have excellent electrical insulation properties, high mechanical strength, and resistance to rapid cooling and heating (widely used in welding fixtures, optical glass forming molds, etc.). Its corrosion resistance is also superior to ordinary ceramics, and its excellent corrosion resistance makes it suitable for use in various chemical equipment. Compared to polytetrafluoroethylene, it is more corrosion-resistant, does not age, and has a longer service life.
